INTRODUCTION

Land's End to John O Groats

Back in early 2020 I had laid down detailed plans and booked all accommodation with a view to cycling LeJog (Land's End to John O Groats) later that year.

However Covid and all its necessary restrictions scuppered all those plans. (Fortunately I had booked all the accommodation with Free Cancellation and Aer Lingus flights were refunded )

But now I'm all ready to get going again. I'll cycle solo and overnight in B&B/ hotels along the way.

Route has been planned in detail and uploaded to my Garmin; all accommodation booked again and flights arranged. My regular cycles have become more frequent and distances increased.

Route

In August  I'll fly from Dublin to Newquay (Cornwall) and transfer the 70 km to Penzance by train. And on that evening I'll do the short hop (15km) from Land's End to Penzance.

An approx of my route
(not accurate for Cornwall and Devon)

On following days I'll cover approx 100km per day up through Bristol, across Severn Bridge and up the eastern side of Wales. I'll pass between Liverpool and Manchester and approach the Lake District; through Carlisle and on to the Scottish border. I intend spending a Rest Day here (after 9 tough days cycling). Refreshed, I'll cycle up through Glasgow, by Loch Lomond through Glencoe and turn north-east along by Loch Ness to Inverness. Some more tough days up to the north coast and a swing right to John O Groats.

So, that'll be 16 days of cycling (1641 km) and 12,000m of ascent. Toughest days of ascent will be early on in Cornwall and Devon and then again in the Highlands.

Bike

I'll be using my trusty Specialized Tri-Cross again and carry the absolute essentials in the two panniers. This bike has served me well over the years and shared all my adventures....we're almost joined at the hip!

Still more preparatory cycling and climbing to be done before August.

Do follow this blog and get the sense that you're travelling along with me ....just leave the pedaling and puffing to me. Sit back and just enjoy it.
